Evan
The words pierced my brain. Pregnant? How could she be pregnant?
âI donât understand,â I said. âYou said you were on the pill.â
âI am. Or was. It doesnât matter now.â
âHow could you be pregnant if youâre on the pill?
Digging into her pocket, she pulled out a little stick and handed it to me.
âIs this what I think it is?â
âThe results of a pregnancy test I took a little while ago. Theyâre supposed to be very accurate. Two lines mean pregnant.â Tears bubbled out of her eyes, but at this moment I couldnât think straight. My mind went straight to the past, and that wasnât working out so well.
I rubbed my face, trying to get a grip on my emotions, which were all over the place. Anger was winning out, which I didnât want. Taking two giant steps backward, I closed my eyes before I unleashed what was on my mind. Accusations flowed through me, but were they really valid? The logical part of me was at war with the emotional side.
âCan I say something?â
âWhy the hell not?â I snapped. She jerked as though Iâd slapped her. Didnât that just make me feel terrific? I shut my eyes once more and blew out a lungful of frustration. âLook, Iâm sorry.â
âYou should be. That was uncalled for. I didnât ask for this.â
âNeither did I.â
âI want to explain. You said I told you I was on the pill that first night.â
âYes, you clearly did. Twice, in fact.â My tone was clipped. Reining in my fucking anger wasnât possible right now.
âI was, dammit. But Iâd also been on antibiotics the week prior.â
âSo? What does that have to do with anything?â I asked.
âSince I was under the influence of tequila, Iâm sure it never entered my mind to mention that, but antibiotics can reduce the potency of birth control pills.â
I wasnât sure I heard correctly. âCan you repeat that?â
She did. âYouâve never heard that before?â
âNo. Why would I?â
âYouâre a very intelligent man. I would think during your past relationships, somewhere along the way one of your girlfriends might have mentioned it.â
This clearly wasnât her fault. âI should never have taken the word of a drunk woman.â
âI did tell the truth. This drunk woman just forgot about the antibiotics. The truth is, I forgot until I took the pregnancy test. And when it turned up positive, I couldnât figure out how in the world it couldâve happened because I never missed a pill. So I thought back and thatâs when it hit me.â
My response was, âI honestly didnât know about the antibiotic effect, seeing as I never got involved with women long enough to find that out after my ordeal. Not only that, I usually wore condoms, except for that one night. Jesus, why did I have to miss that one damn night? So I suppose this was my fault for being so fucking stupid.â
âAre you saying you regret all of this?â
âHow could you possibly read that into what I just said?â
âYour tone of voice and the fact that you said you were stupid.
